Our shop is in Woodinville, a short drive east of Bothell on Hwy 522, and we’re a family-owned shop that has been in Woodinville for over 15 years.

What that noise is telling you
Different exhaust sounds point to different problems, which is why we listen before we quote anything.
- A deep rumble that gets louder when you accelerate usually means a hole in the muffler or a leak at a pipe joint.
- A rattle at idle or over bumps is often a loose heat shield, a broken hanger, or a baffle that has come loose inside the muffler.
- A ticking or puffing sound near the engine, worst on a cold start, points to a leaking exhaust manifold or gasket.
- A hiss can be a small crack or a failed gasket.
- A scrape or clunk over speed bumps means a hanger has broken and the system is hanging low.
Smoke and smells are not always the muffler
Smoke from the tailpipe usually starts in the engine, not the muffler. Blue-gray smoke means burning oil, thick white smoke with a sweet smell means coolant, and black smoke means too much fuel. A rotten-egg smell often points to the catalytic converter. We check for all of these so you fix the actual cause.
If you smell exhaust inside the car, don’t put it off. A leak ahead of the muffler can let carbon monoxide into the cabin, especially when you’re sitting in slow traffic.
Why mufflers wear out on Bothell cars
Mufflers mostly rust from the inside out. Every engine makes water vapor, and on short trips the exhaust never gets hot enough to drive it out, so it condenses and sits in the muffler. A lot of Bothell driving is short hops to school, the store and back, which is exactly the pattern that rots a muffler early. Wet roads, road grime and steep driveways finish the job from the outside.
Repair or replace?
A broken hanger, loose clamp, failed gasket or small hole can usually be repaired. A muffler rusted through or rattling inside needs to be replaced, and a pipe rusted thin is replaced in sections, not as a whole system.
