What your exhaust system does
Your exhaust system carries hot gases from the engine to the back of the car and away from the people inside it. Along the way it cleans them and quiets them down. It starts at the exhaust manifold, runs through the oxygen sensors and catalytic converter, then through pipes, a resonator on many cars, and the muffler. Rubber hangers and clamps hold it all under the car.
The muffler is a set of chambers and perforated tubes that cancel out engine noise. When it rusts through or comes apart inside, you hear it right away.
Signs of muffler or exhaust trouble
Bring your car or truck in if you notice any of these:
- The exhaust is louder than usual, or roars when you accelerate
- A rattle or buzz from underneath, often a loose heat shield
- A ticking or hissing near the engine, which can be a manifold leak
- An exhaust smell inside the car
- A pipe or muffler hanging low or scraping
- Smoke from the tailpipe, a check engine light, or worse fuel mileage
Why exhaust systems wear out around here
Exhaust parts usually fail from the inside out. Every time you start the engine, water forms in the cold pipes. On a long drive the system gets hot enough to burn it off. On short trips around Woodinville it never does, so the water sits in the muffler and rusts it from within. Add our wet roads and the de-icer used on the mountain passes in winter, and the outside rusts too.
Potholes, speed bumps and steep driveways take their toll as well. A broken hanger lets the system sag and swing, which cracks pipes and joints over time.
How we diagnose and repair it
The noise is not always coming from the muffler. We put the car on the lift, look over the whole system from the manifold back, and find the exact leak, crack or loose part. Sometimes the fix is a hanger, a clamp or a heat shield. Sometimes it is one section of pipe or the muffler itself. Smoke or a check engine light can point to a sensor or a catalytic converter problem, which we also handle.

When it can wait and what affects the cost
A rattling heat shield or a slightly louder muffler can usually be scheduled around your week. An exhaust smell in the cabin cannot wait. Carbon monoxide has no smell of its own, so if you can smell exhaust, other gases are getting in too.
Cost depends on which parts are damaged, how badly rust has fused the old pieces together, and the vehicle. Trucks and diesel vehicles often have larger, longer systems. We give you a clear estimate first and work with your timeline and budget.
