Signs your car’s A/C needs attention
Most A/C problems give some warning before the system quits. Here’s what to watch for:
- Air that’s cool on the highway but warm at a stoplight, or warm all the time
- Weak airflow from the vents, even with the fan turned up
- A musty or sour smell when you first turn it on
- Grinding, squealing or rattling when the A/C kicks on
- Water on the passenger floor, or windows that fog up and won’t clear
Each one points somewhere different. Warm air can mean low refrigerant, a compressor that isn’t engaging, a bad electrical connection or a blend door stuck on heat. Weak airflow is often a clogged cabin air filter or a weak blower motor. A musty smell usually means moisture and mold on the evaporator.
Recharge or leak repair?
A/C refrigerant runs in a sealed loop. It doesn’t burn off like fuel, so if the system is low, it’s leaking somewhere. A recharge alone may give you cold air for a few weeks, but the refrigerant will find its way out again.
We test for leaks before we refill anything. Common spots are O-rings, hose fittings, the compressor seals and the condenser up front, where road debris hits it. Once the leak is fixed, we evacuate the system, recharge it to the factory spec and check that the air coming out of the vents is as cold as it should be.
Compressors, evaporators and hoses
The compressor is the heart of the system, and when it’s failing you’ll often hear it first. Sometimes only the compressor clutch, a relay or a pressure switch is at fault, which is a smaller repair, so we check those before recommending a new compressor. When a compressor fails internally, it can send debris through the lines. A proper repair then includes flushing the system and replacing the parts that trap that debris.
Evaporators sit behind the dash and take a lot of labor to reach, which drives much of the cost. Hoses and condensers are usually simpler. We’ll explain the options and tell you what can wait.
Don’t forget the heater
Heating and A/C share the same vents, blower and controls, so we handle both. If your heater blows cold, the cause may be low coolant, a stuck thermostat or a clogged heater core. Coolant problems can also point to an engine running hot, which our engine repair page covers.
In a wet Woodinville winter, a working defroster matters as much as a working heater. Most defrost settings run the A/C to pull moisture out of the air, which is why a weak A/C can leave your windshield fogged on a rainy morning. A fresh cabin air filter at your scheduled maintenance helps airflow year round.
